Division of Property
Contrary to popular belief, common-law couples do not divide their property in the same manner as married couples upon separation.
Common-law couples hold very little right to ownership of anything not solely or jointly in their name.
Married couples most often must equally divide all assets accumulated during the marriage, minus any debt also accumulated during that time.
